Cool Events

September 1st, 2010

There is all sorts of good stuff going on out there in the world of ADHD. Here is some of the best. (I know, I know, some of this stuff isn’t actually an event, but I didn’t know where else to put it on the site.)

ADHD Awareness Week (Sept. 13-17)

CHADD, ADDA, ACO, and ADDitude Magazine have partnered to proclaim this week ADHD Awareness Week. You can find out more and get a bunch of good information, including events that each group is doing, at http://www.adhdawareness2010.org/.

You can also download a PDF to post up in your town to spread the word about ADHD (please do this).

ADDA (the ADD Association) will be hosting a night of teleclasses that is open to everyone on Thursday night, 9/16. Log in information is on the way. Here is the schedule (Eastern time):

7:00 - 7:30 ADHD 101 (Ari Tuckman, PsyD, MBA)
7:30 -  8:00 Treatment Options A-Z, Part 1: Medication and Alternative Treatments (Tracy Ware, MD)
8:00 - 8:15 Break
8:15 - 8:45 Treatment Options A-Z, Part 2: Psychological Interventions (David Teplin, PhD)
8:45 - 9:15 Practical Strategies to Calm the Chaos (Kim Kensington, PsyD and Linda Roggli)
9:15 - 10:00 Everything You Wanted to Know about ADHD but Forgot to Ask (all presenters?)

ADHD and Relationships Presentation and Fundraiser (9/24, Baltimore)

I will be doing a fundraiser for CHADD of Baltimore. This will be a pretty swanky event meant for couples to come and have a good time. I will be talking about ADHD and relationships, but with an equal balance between informing and entertaining. You can get more information and buy tickets at chadd-mc.org.

Virtual ADHD Conference (10/4 - 10/6)

The Virtual ADHD Conference is back for its third year and is loaded with great speakers. It’s three days of presentations, all done through the web so you don’t have to travel. I will be doing a presentation entitled Six Simple Rules: Fundamental Strategies to Overcome Inattention, Hyperactivity, and Impulsivity on Monday, 10/4, from 10:00 - 11:00 AM EST. You can get all the details at ADHDconference.com. I recorded an interview with the conference director, Jennifer Koretsky (who’s awesome) so you can get to that by clicking the podcasts page.

Interview on ADHD Coach Talk Radio

Tara McGillicuddy and I talked about finding the right kind of help for ADHD. She’s always fun and asks great questions. She’s also the main person behind ADDclasses.com who I’ve done a ton of teleclasses for. You can listen in by clicking here.

ADD Resources Conference (10/9)

Bellevue, WA (outside Seattle). With keynotes from Gabor Mate, MD and Nancy Ratey, EdM, MCC, SCAC. I had the honor and the pleasure of one of their keynotes last year. Great people who put on a great conference. More information at ADDresources.org.

CHADD Conference (11/11 - 11/13)

Atlanta, GA. This is the ultimate ADHD conference of the year. Lots of great speakers and an unparalelled chance to meet all sorts of interesting people. More information at chadd.org.

Find Local Professionals

I’m often contacted asking for suggestions for local therapists, prescribers, coaches, etc. Although a personal recommendation is always best, try the professional directories on these sites. These listings make no guarantee that the person is any good, but at least they have an interest in working with folks with ADHD.

New Proposed Diagnostic Criteria

The authors of the new DSM (the official diagnostic manual) have posted their proposed options for updating the criteria used to diagnose ADHD. You can read the summary or the six page PDF or see all the changes at dsm5.org.

Interview on HealthLifeandStuff.com

I was interviewed about ADHD by the guy behind this cool website. Don’t tell anyone that he’s still a college student. Check it out.

Time-Waster Blockers

OK, so this isn’t really an event, but I promised in episode 46 (Two Tools to Stop the Flood, 2/5/10) that I would post the links to the programs you can use to limit how much time you waste on unproductive websites.

LeechBlock works with Firefox.

StayFocsd works with Google Chrome. The developer told me that this is an early version and that refinements are in the works, so it will only get better.

Quotes in Article about Possible Stimulant Abuse in Baseball

I was interviewed for an article for Yahoo Sports about the number of professional baseball players who say they have ADHD and therefore should be allowed to take prescription stimulants. The reporter was a bit harsher on the subject than I would have been, but it’s interesting stuff. Check it out here.

The New Rules for Getting Organized

This is an article I wrote for SmartManDaily.com. It’s written for a general audience, which just goes to show that everyone is struggling more with being organized now than they used to in the past.

ADHD Business Coaching

Suzanne Evans is doing a program to assist professionals with ADHD to build more successful and satisfying  businesses. It’s a pretty impressive package that she and her colleagues are offering. You can find more information by clicking here.
